This tour begins with an introduction to India’s Jewish communities—their 2000-year history, arrival, cultural diversity, and long tradition of acceptance. After the orientation, sightseeing starts with Sassoon Docks (if begun early), built by a Baghdadi Jewish family and bustling with morning fishing activity, showcasing Mumbai’s fisher-folk community. Next, we head to the Gateway of India, the Fort Heritage District, and the Kala Ghoda Art District, including visits to the beautifully designed Kenneseth Eliyahoo Synagogue and the David Sassoon Library. We then visit Mumbai’s oldest synagogue, the Shaar Harahamim (Gate of Mercy, 1796), built by Bene Israeli Samuel Ezekiel Divekar, located on Samuel Street. Afterwards, we explore the tall blue Magen David Synagogue and the Sassoon Children’s School in the same compound. En route, you’ll see Victoria Terminus (a UNESCO site), the Bombay Municipal Building, and can also walk through Crawford Market and the traditional bazaar area, known for its mix of Hindu, Muslim, Jain, and Jewish traders. The tour continues to Dhobi Ghat, the city’s famous open-air laundry, and passes Haji Ali, the iconic mosque in the sea. Nearby, we visit the Tippereth Israel Synagogue and, if possible, the Magen Hassidim. The route also includes Marine Drive/Chowpatty, Oval Maidan, the High Court, Bombay University, Flora Fountain, Old Banking District, Horniman Circle, Asiatic Library, and Regal Circle, concluding with a visit to Mani Bhavan, Gandhi’s inspiring Mumbai residence.
