The word “Dabbawala,” meaning “box-carrier,” refers to Mumbai workers who deliver home-cooked lunches to office staff. Guests are picked up from the hotel and driven to Mahalaxmi Station, located beside the famous Dhobi Ghat and served by the Mumbai Suburban Railways. Here, most Dabbawalas unload and sort tiffin boxes by area, explaining their unique coding system that ensures perfect delivery. Guests then visit Dhobi Ghat, Mumbai’s traditional open-air laundry where hundreds of dhobis wash, beat, boil, dry, and iron clothes in hereditary concrete wash pens. Afterwards, guests take a train to Churchgate Station to see Dabbawalas rearranging tiffins by destination, including special crates carrying up to 150 boxes to high-demand areas like Nariman Point and Maker Chambers. The tour ends with a return transfer to the hotel.
